A year after the Battle of Badr, the polytheists in Mecca decided to avenge their defeat and eliminate the Muslims. They gathered a large army exceeding three thousand fighters, led by Abu Sufyan.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) set out with an army of one thousand Muslims, but Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul withdrew with a third of the army, leaving the Muslims with only seven hundred fighters. The Prophet took his position at Mount Uhud and placed fifty archers on a nearby hill, commanding them never to leave their post, regardless of whether the outcome was victory or defeat.
The battle began, and the Muslims initially achieved victory, causing the polytheists to flee and retreat. At that point, the archers thought the battle had ended, and most of them descended to collect spoils, disobeying the command of the Messenger (peace be upon him).
Khalid ibn al-Walid exploited the empty space behind the Muslims with his cavalry, launching a surprise attack from the rear. The course of the battle turned against the Muslims. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was wounded, and many Companions were martyred, including Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him).
The Muslims gathered around the Prophet and ascended Mount Uhud to retreat and seek refuge there. Despite the losses, the battle taught the Muslims important lessons about obedience and discipline.
